Most small business owners know they should be on social media, but few have the time to post every day. The good news is that you don't need to. Consistency matters more than volume. Here's a realistic plan that keeps your business visible without eating into your week.
The short answer
For most small businesses, a steady rhythm works best:
- Instagram: 3 posts a week, plus stories when you have something to share
- Facebook: 2–3 posts a week
- LinkedIn: 1–2 posts a week if you sell to other businesses
- Google Business Profile: 1 update a week
It's better to post three times a week every week than to post daily for a fortnight and then disappear for two months.
Pick one or two platforms, not all of them
You don't need to be everywhere. Think about where your customers spend their time. A wedding florist will probably get more from Instagram and Pinterest. An accountant may get more from LinkedIn and Facebook. Do one or two platforms well rather than five badly.
A simple weekly plan
This three-post rhythm works for almost any local business:
- Monday: show your work, such as a finished project, a product or a before-and-after
- Wednesday: share something useful, like a tip, an answer to a common question or a short how-to
- Friday: show the people behind the business, a customer review or a behind-the-scenes moment
Batch your content to save time
Set aside one hour a fortnight to plan and schedule your posts. Take photos as you work, write your captions in one sitting and use the free scheduling tools built into Meta Business Suite or LinkedIn. That one hour replaces the daily 'what should I post?' stress.
Make every post look like you
Consistent colours, fonts and photo style make your posts recognisable as people scroll. A small set of branded templates is one of the easiest ways to look more professional and save time.
What to measure
Don't worry too much about likes. Look at the numbers that relate to business:
- Profile visits and website clicks
- Messages and enquiries
- Saves and shares, which show your content was useful
- Which posts lead to real conversations
